Peter Carroll & Ann McBrien Family

Peter and Ann (McBrien/McBreen) Carroll were Irish immigrants who were born in in Kilsherdany parish of County Cavan, Ireland. The initial information on Peter, his wife and children came from the serendipitous connection with a descendant of Matthew Carroll (Peter's son) who is currently living in Minnesota. She generously provided information on Peter and his family including pictures and obituaries. This led to a search of the Irish Catholic baptismal records which yielded a treasure trove of information. I am forever in her debt.

Family stories indicate Peter may have immigrated in the 1830s but he makes his official appearance in the 1850 U.S. census. Son Patrick was born in Ireland in 1842 and daughter Catherine was born in Ohio in 1845. This makes immigration likely sometime between the two events. To further complicate matters, there is a passenger ship manifest below which shows Ann Carroll with sons Matthew, Owen and Patrick arriving in New York December 1848. Perhaps she went back for a visit or to attend a funeral and took the three oldest with her. Catherine is listed in the Kilsherdany baptismal records but she maintained her entire life that she was born in Ohio. We may never know for sure. Peter and his family lived in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio until they moved to Dubuque County, Iowa in 1857 or 1858. Peter lived there until his death in 1885 following the death of his wife in 1873.
