William Goodier & Sarah Schneider Family
This page is devoted to all of the documents and records collected for the William Goodier family. William enlisted in the 117th New York Regiment of the Union Army in 1862. He was paid a bounty of $ 50.00. He enlisted as Sergeant and held that rank until shortly before his death. William was shot in the chest and arm, at the battle of Darbytown also known as Fair Oaks. He died in the hospital at Fort Monroe, VA and is buried in the National Cemetery in Hamptons, VA. Sarah remarried following his death but she died of Cholera in 1873 leaving the 2 girls as orphans. Sarah's mother, Magdalena "Kate" Schneider, wrote to the pension Board and asked that the guardianship of the children be given to relatives of William Goodier. She asserted that their stepfather, William H. Williams, was using the pension money for his own benefit and giving it to his relatives as well. The girls left their stepfather and they stayed with their Great-Uncle Samuel Goodier and his family until they were married.
