Joseph Winzer Civil War Information

 

Egon Joseph Winzer had come to America with his brothers in the mid 1850s. He settled in Pittsburgh where he became a blacksmith for the railroad. President Lincoln sent out a call for soldiers and Joseph responded by enlisting in the Pennsylvania Reserves on May 1, 1861. He served as a private for thre years in some of the most remembered battles including Bull Run, Antietam, and Gettysburg. At the Battle of Gettyburg his regiment were sent in support of Little Round Top which was a pivotal battle. His unit was in the line at the Battle of Wildernesswhen they were pulled off the line just before the start of the battle as their term of enlistment had expired. They were returned to Pittburgh and mustered out on May 12, 1864. Four days after his mustering out, he married Eva Christianna Ganss in Cleveland and settled into his new life.
