Joseph Winzer & Eva Christiana Ganss Family

This page is devoted to all of the documents and records collected for the Joseph Winzer family. Joseph (along with two brothers Emil and Engelbert) emigrated from Stetten, Lorrach, Germany in 1856. In Germany he was named Egon (all 7 living children had names beginning with "E") which he informally changed to Joseph once he got here. He initially settled in Pittsburgh and worked as a blacksmith for the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad. He enlisted in the Union army in 1861 and was mustered out in 1864. Three days after he mustered out in Pittsburgh, he was in Cleveland marrying Eva Christianna Ganss. They remained in Cleveland the rest of their lives. Eva Christianna Ganss immigrated to the US from Frankenthal, Germany at the age of 20 in 1856. In the 1860 census, she is living in Cleveland as a domestic servant.
